Insurance Agency Serving Westport, MA

Westport changes character depending on which end of Route 88 you live on: commuter territory at the top, farmland and barrier beach at the bottom. Westport MA insurance should reflect that, and Tetrault Insurance compares rates across multiple carriers to find what fits.

Car Insurance in Westport, MA

Being independent means we are not locked into selling one carrier’s products. We work with multiple insurance companies to compare rates and coverage options, then recommend what fits your situation.

Driving in Westport

Route 88 runs 11.3 miles from I-195 down to Horseneck Beach, which makes it the longest state route in Massachusetts contained entirely within a single town. It is a divided highway for most of that distance, crosses the Fontaine Bridge over the East Branch of the Westport River, and ends just short of the beach parking. Route 6, which runs as State Road, crosses it in the north. Route 177, American Legion Highway, cuts west toward Tiverton.

No Westport intersection appears on the current Southeastern Massachusetts list of the 100 most dangerous intersections, but the town’s risk profile is unusual. Horseneck Beach State Reservation is one of the busiest beaches in the state, and every summer weekend pushes out-of-town traffic down an 11-mile corridor that runs through farmland the rest of the year. Add Main Road, Drift Road, and Hix Bridge Road, which are narrow, curving, and shared with tractors, cyclists, and the occasional loose animal, and you have two very different driving environments in one town.

What Massachusetts Requires

Massachusetts mandates four coverages before you can register a vehicle: bodily injury liability (25/50), property damage liability ($30,000), personal injury protection ($8,000), and uninsured motorist coverage (25/50). Those limits rose on July 1, 2025, the first increase since 1988, and they still represent the legal minimum rather than adequate protection. The property damage minimum is $30,000, but the average new car sells for nearly $50,000, and a serious accident can cost far more. Read our guide to Massachusetts car insurance coverage for the full breakdown.

Why Westport Drivers Need More

Highway-speed traffic on Route 88, seasonal volume from drivers who do not know the roads, and narrow rural routes with limited sightlines produce a wide range of accident scenarios. Most insurance professionals recommend at least 100/300/100 coverage. The step up from state minimums usually costs far less than the protection it buys, and we can quote both levels side by side so you see your actual numbers rather than an average. If you own a home or have savings, an umbrella policy adds another layer above your auto and homeowners limits.

More Than Car Insurance

Car insurance is where most people start, but it’s not the only coverage Westport residents need.

Homeowners and Flood Insurance

Westport has more coastline and more river frontage than almost any town its size in Massachusetts. Properties around Westport Point, Acoaxet, and the East and West Branches of the Westport River sit in FEMA-designated flood zones, and anything near Horseneck or Cherry & Webb faces direct barrier beach exposure. Standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. Flood insurance is a separate policy. Inland, the exposure is different. Westport’s working farms, dairy operations, and vineyards mean many homeowners policies here need to account for barns, equipment, and outbuildings, none of which a standard dwelling quote handles well. A homeowners policy protects against fire, theft, wind damage, and liability, but on an agricultural parcel the other structures and personal property limits need real attention.

Renters Insurance

Your landlord’s insurance covers the building, not your belongings. A renters policy covers your personal property, provides liability protection, and is one of the least expensive policies we write.

Business Insurance

Westport’s business base is farms, vineyards, and seasonal operations alongside contractors and trades along the Route 6 corridor. A business open six months a year carries different liability exposure than a year-round shop, and seasonal operations often need property coverage, liability, and workers’ compensation set to how they actually trade rather than to a calendar year. We write business insurance for small and mid-sized companies across the South Coast.

Why Tetrault Insurance

Tetrault Insurance is a family-owned agency, not a branch office of a national chain. We have one location, one team, and one phone number. When you call, you talk to someone who knows your name and your policy.

Tetrault Insurance Agency office at 4317 Acushnet Avenue in New Bedford, MA

As an independent agency, we work with multiple insurance companies and compare rates across them. If one carrier raises your rate at renewal, we shop the market for you without starting from scratch. We are based on Acushnet Avenue in New Bedford, a straight run east on I-195, and we are involved in the South Coast community.

“I’ve been with Tetrault since I got my license 20 years ago. I remember going there with my parents as a kid and eating M&M’s from the counter. When I hit a deer a year and a half ago, they walked me through it and helped me every way they could. Last Friday someone rear-ended me, and by 11:30 that morning I was in a rental with everything settled. Wonderful business with wonderful people.”

“Everyone here is knowledgeable and friendly. I have all my business and personal insurance with Tetrault. My workers’ comp and liability insurance are excellent. I just bought a new car and all it took was one phone call and everything was taken care of.”

“I originally called about a form after my mom passed away. The person I spoke to was very kind about the situation. When she asked if there was anything else she could help with, I jokingly said my premium had gone up. She could have just apologized and said that’s the rate. Instead she looked around and found me a policy that saved me a lot of money. That phone call ended up making my day.”

“Everyone who works here is great. They found me a new auto insurance that cut my yearly bill in half. I’m grateful to work with Tetrault Insurance.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need flood insurance in Westport?

Much of the town’s shoreline and river frontage sits in FEMA-designated flood zones, including areas around Westport Point, Acoaxet, and both branches of the Westport River. If your property is in a mapped zone, your mortgage lender likely requires flood coverage. Outside a mapped zone, flood damage can still occur from heavy rain, storm surge, or rising tides. Standard homeowners policies never cover flood. Given how much of Westport sits close to water, it is worth confirming your zone rather than assuming.

Does my homeowners policy cover a barn, farm equipment, or a farm stand?

Partly, and often not enough. Barns and outbuildings fall under other structures coverage, which defaults to a percentage of your dwelling limit and is frequently short on a larger parcel. Tractors and equipment may need to be scheduled separately. And if you sell to the public or host visitors on the property, that is business activity rather than personal use. Most carriers exclude it from a homeowners policy, and it is usually not something you can add back by endorsement. A commercial general liability policy or a business owners policy is generally what covers it. Worth a conversation before the season starts so you know where that line falls.

What is the difference between an independent agency and a captive agent?

A captive agent works for one insurance company and can only sell that company’s products. An independent agency like Tetrault works with multiple carriers and can compare rates and coverage across them. We shop the market on your behalf rather than being limited to one company’s offerings.
